Smokin'... With the volcanic ash finish, we aim to replicate the stunning aesthetic and textural quality of shou sugi-ban, the Japanese technique of charring wood to preserve it for use as exterior siding, in a furniture application. The subtle flowing grain pattern of ash in this specific finish offers the intrigue of oozing lava turned black molten rock.
Using domestically grown and responsibly harvested solid ash, we surface the rough sawn lumber and then torch it in the shou sugi-ban style. The torching process burns away the soft grains and leaves an interesting topography of the harder grains behind. We seal the wood with a charcoal-tinted natural oil for longterm protection.
An overall charcoal black tone, this wood finish pairs well with any of our steel finishes. For contrast, pair it with gloss white or stainless steel. For a tone-on-tone, rock-and-roll look, choose waxed or matte black. File this wood finish under Japanese/Scandinavian modern.
Solid wood will expand and contract based on the humidity level of its environment. A good rule of thumb is to maintain a 40-50% relative humidity level in your home. This finish can be adapted for outdoor use by request, prior to/at checkout. Products sealed with an exterior-grade finish will require regular maintenance (reapplication) according to your specific environmental conditions.
Although very strong, solid wood is susceptible to scratches and marks. Therefore we still recommend protecting the wood as best you can with the use of trivets, coasters, and pads for hot, wet, or coarse items.
