No, we use sustainably-harvested, regionally-sourced (eastern US) wood and then treat it with natural washes (vinegar-based) and sealers (oil & wax) to achieve the aged look. This allows us to create the tone and texture of well-worn wood, without the worry of lead paint, mold/mildew, insects, splitting boards, nails, and limited supply.
No, the volcanic ash wood finish is loosely based on shou sugi ban, the ancient Japanese technique of charring wood to preserve it for use as exterior siding. We torch the wood to the blackened tone you see in the product photos, which not only gives it the great color, but also exposes the wood's grain and texture. Then we seal it with the same natural, floor-grade oil finish used on our other finishes for longterm protection.
Yes! We are happy to make adjustments to our standard sizes to ensure our pieces fit perfectly in their new homes. Please contact us to communicate what it is you're looking to customize. Price will vary based on the dimensions (length x width x height) and finishes.

No, unfortunately we do not work with wood stains and are not able to offer color-matching.

How soon will my new piece be ready to ship? +
Building a piece of furniture by hand, start to finish, is a process, but one we truly enjoy. From the wood selection, to the arrangement of each plank in its rightful place, to the laminating, planing, sanding, and sealing of the wood surfaces, not to mention the welding, grinding, heating up and sealing of the steel, each piece takes a minimum of 1 and up to 10 weeks to produce.
Estimated production (lead) times are listed for each product; please contact us to confirm lead times or if you are under a time constraint and we will do our best to accommodate.
We ship from our studio in central Florida to anywhere in the continental US.

Finish sample orders are shipped USPS. Original benches are shipped UPS Ground.
All other pieces can be shipped via Standard Delivery (freight, "curbside," included in the price listed), or White Glove Delivery (in-home installation & assembly, for an additional charge).
Sure! What we call "Standard Delivery" is included in the price listed for each product. This shipping method is “curbside," which means it does not include in-home installation, assembly, or packaging removal. For in-home installation, assembly, and packaging removal, you'll want to select "White Glove Delivery" at checkout.
Standard DeliveryFreight shipments travel via semi-truck. They arrive in a crate on a pallet and are delivered “curbside." This can mean at the end of your driveway, in your building's lobby, or even literally on the sidewalk infront of your residence. You will need to unpack (carefully, watch out for screws!), carry-in, and assemble your piece (if necessary--see product descriptions to determine if your piece requires assembly), as well as dispose of packaging material (OSB, screws, foam, pad wrap, etc.).
Generally, freight shipments arrive within 5 business days of leaving our studio. Once the shipment has arrived at the freight company's local terminal, they will contact you to schedule a delivery window. Since all of our pieces are made of solid wood and steel, they are quite heavy. It is a good idea to invite some able-bodied friends over at delivery time to help you unpack, carry in, and assemble (if necessary) your new furniture.
White Glove DeliveryAlternatively, you can upgrade to White Glove Delivery service at checkout for an additional charge. White glove delivery can increase transit time, however your furniture will be unpacked, carried into your room of choice, and assembled for you. Additionally, all packaging material will be disposed of.
With either shipping method, you must provide your shipping address and phone number at checkout, to ensure a hassle-free delivery experience. The phone number you provide will only be used to schedule the delivery. We do not sell or share your information with anyone else. We use it strictly for coordinating the delivery of your order.

Will my piece require assembly? +
Each product description identifies whether it requires assembly. The Original dining table and benches, as well as the bed, require assembly. Instructions for assembly, as well as the necessary hardware are included with your piece. The Bento dining and coffee tables, benches, and stools, as well as the entry table, cupboard, media console, and bar and counter benches, come fully assembled.
All wood surfaces are sealed with Rubio Monocoat, a natural, floor-grade oil finish. For the first 2 weeks, we recommend that you wipe clean with a well wrung-out damp cloth (water only, no soap). After the first 2 weeks, use ph-balanced or ph-neutral soaps (no harsh chemicals! no ammonia! no bleach!) to clean surfaces. Visit the Rubio Monocoat website to purchase the products they recommend for routine and deep cleaning, as well as for rejuvenation and maintenance. What we love most about this finish product is how easy it is to repair damaged surfaces or to refresh surfaces that have aged--in most cases, all you'll need to do is wipe on the oil or cleaner, wait a few minutes, and wipe off!
Wood surfaces that have been treated for exterior use will require regular maintenance (reapplication of the exterior sealer), periodically, depending on your environment and the level to which the environment is having an effect. We recommend and use Rubio Monocoat's RMC Hybrid Wood Protector. Surfaces should be protected (covered) from the elements when not in use.
All steel surfaces are waxed to minimize oxidation and patina. You can re-apply Sculpt Nouveau Clear Metal Wax (or similar) every 24 months, or as needed, to minimize patina. Stainless steel will not patina and does not require any further maintenance.
Do use a well wrung-out damp cloth, along with ph-balanced or ph-neutral cleaners. Since all wood surfaces have been sealed with Rubio Monocoat, we recommend their RMC Soap or Surface Care for regular cleaning or the RMC Tannin Remover to assist in removing tough stains.

Do protect wood surfaces from direct heat: use trivets for hot pots & pans
Do protect wood from liquids: use coasters for drinks & placemats for food and wipe up any spills to prevent standing water
Do protect wood from direct sunlight; sunlight can alter finishes & oxidize hardwoods
Do maintain uniform humidity in your home to reduce wood settling/checking; optimum relative humidity is between 40-50%
Do apply a maintenance product if your wood surfaces look parched or require some rejuvenation. For interior surfaces, we use and recommend Rubio Monocoat's RMC Universal Maintenance Oil or RMC Refresh Eco available here. For exterior surfaces, use RMC Hybrid Wood Protector, available here.
Don't use ammonia-based or commercial cleaners, solvents, synthetic waxes, or sprays

What happens if my piece has been damaged during shipping? +
If your piece has been damaged in-transit, please keep all crating materials; document the damage by taking clear, unfiltered pictures, and notify us within 3 business days.
If your piece was delivered via white glove delivery service, you must also document the damage with the delivery personnel prior to them leaving your home.
We take personal pride in the quality and craftsmanship of our furniture, as each piece is created by our own two hands. Our attention to detail in design, material, and construction is uncompromising, and so is our commitment to customer satisfaction.
We accept returns of our standard pieces within 30 days. Please retain all packaging material and contact us within 7 days for return shipping instructions. You will be responsible for return shipping charges, except when the return is due to a defect or damage. Once we have received the return, we will issue a refund for your purchase price only (any charged taxes will be refunded in accordance with state and local laws). Shipping charges are non-refundable.
We cannot accept returns of custom orders, including customized dimensions of our standard pieces, except when the return is due to a defect or damage.
