the volcanic ash finish consists of domestically grown and responsibly harvested solid ash. after surfacing the rough sawn lumber, we torch the wood planks in the shou sugi-ban style, burning the soft grains away and leaving an interesting topography of the harder grains behind. we seal the wood with a charcoal-tinted natural oil. the subtle flowing grain pattern of ash in this specific finish offers the intrigue of flowing lava turned black rock.
an overall charcoal black tone, this wood finish pairs well with any of our steel finishes. for visual contrast, pair with glossy white or stainless steel. for tone-on-tone, choose waxed or matte black.
solid wood will expand and contract based on the humidity level of its environment. while solid ash is very strong, it is susceptible to scratches and marks, so the use of trivets, coasters and pads are recommended for hot, wet or coarse items.
